More than half the species on the planet are bugs! They are the biggest & most diverse group alive!

Week 2: Gnawing Gnats
Gnats are teeny tiny flying bugs. They only live about 5 days.
A single gnat can lay 200 eggs and 1 week later when they hatch, 90% of them will be female.

Week 3: Buzzing Bees
Bumble bees have sticky hairs on their legs where pollen sticks and they take the pollen back to the nest for honey. Bumble bees get their name from the humming or bumbling sound they make as they fly
and they live in large colonies with 1 queen and up to 80,000 workers called drones.

Week 4: Frisky Fleas
Fleas never fly ~ neither do bed bugs! Fleas do not have a neck, waist or wings.
It's body is covered with armored plates. They drink blood for nourishment.

Week 5: Crawling Small
Ground beetles can fly but they prefer to crawl on the ground.
Longhorn beetle gets its name from it's antenae which is sometimes longer than its whole body.

Most grasshoppers are plain brown or green. The Band Wing Grasshopper has bright red or yellow back wings which show up when they fly.

Week 6: Insectology
Insects have 2 main body parts: A- Head   B- Thorax   C- Abdomen
They have antanna and 3 sets of legs and often 1-2 sets of wings. Insects are related
to crabs and lobsters. Like these sea animals, their skeletons are on the outside of their bodies.

Week 7: Ants Insect Inspect
Free Audio BookWhen looking for food, ants leave a trail of scent on the ground for others in the colony to follow. The colony can be home to thousands of ants and often has many "rooms" set aside for certain tasks like taking care of the babies. There is a queen ant with a room to herself.

Week 8: Book Worm Germs
There are at least 1,000,000 species of worms all over the world. The most common worm is the earthworm. Earthworms in general have been around for 120 million years, evolving during the time of the dinosaurs. Earthworms are great for making healthy dirt! Worm Love

Week 9: Spiders Spell Well
Spiders taste with their feet! The Garden Spider lets her babies eat her as their first prey.
Black widow spiders have a bite 15x more poisonous than a rattle snake!

Week 10: Crawly Ugly

Week 11: Why Fly
Dragonfly
A May Fly lives a few hours or 1-2 days. The female looks for a mate, lays the eggs and then dies.
Dragonflies fly in a straight line. Damselflies flit around like butterflies.

Week 12: Caterpillars Into Butterflies
Butterfly
A butterfly lays eggs that hatch into caterpillars. The caterpillars eat all the time and get bigger and bigger. They shed their skin several times before they stop eating and go into into a pupa or chrysalis.
In there, they turn into a butterfly
. There are 15,000 - 20,000 species of butterflies worldwide.

Week 13: Book Bug Hug Bye Bye
Beetles have more species than any other, constituting about 25% of all known life-forms. 40% of all described insect species are beetles (about 350,000 species!) and they keep finding new ones!
